Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween, everyone! Today we get to fill our stomachs with unhealthiness and try not to think of how much our bodies will hate us tomorrow, or how far we’ll have to run to get rid of these calories. So, if we’re giving up the calorie-counting for today, what are your favorite treats to make for your Halloween festivities? Whether you’re having an office luncheon or a party at your house later tonight (or perhaps this weekend), everyone has at least one Halloween treat that is their signature dish. So what’s yours? Here are some pictures from the last two years of Halloween parties here at the ChefUniforms.com office:

Chef Coats for Charity

In the spirit of the season, ChefUniforms.com has donated 45 chef coats to the World Cares Center for its Iron Skillet Cook Off. For those who don’t know what this organization does, its mission is to “alleviate the pain and suffering inherent in accidents and disasters by empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and training local citizens, agencies, and leaders to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergency situations.” In order to achieve this mission, the organization puts together events for the community.

One of the events that the World Cares Center puts on annually is the Iron Skillet Cook Off in Manhattan. This event features the top chefs of the New York Fire Department going head to head with local restaurant chefs, and 100% of the proceeds go to the World Cares Center. Monday, October 24th was the 10th anniversary of the event, and was an “All-Star Edition”, showcasing the winners of the past 9 years, plus 1 wild card entry. Not only is this event a blast, but it raises money for a great cause. Check out this picture of the 2011 Cook Off winners:

National Pizza Month

October is home to so many different and interesting food-related holidays and events. World Egg Day on the 14th, World Food Day on the 17th, Nut Day on the 22nd, and of course you have Halloween on the 31st. However, as you may or may not already know, October is also National Pizza Month! Back in 1987, Congress dubbed October “National Pizza Month”, in honor of one of the most widely enjoyed foods in the country.

As Americans, we love our pizza. In fact, if the pizza that was consumed on a daily basis in the U.S. was placed on the ground, it would cover almost 100 acres! That means Americans eat almost 350 slices of pizza per second! This country was home to the largest pizza in the world… until 30,000 people in Havana, Florida ate it! It weighed in at almost 45,000 pounds and served about 90,000 slices.

When it comes to toppings, Americans like the more traditional pepperoni (at least, it’s traditional to us!), whereas pizza connoisseurs from overseas like a little more variety…

Here at ChefUniforms.com, we love having pizza parties. What’s your favorite type of pizza? Leave a comment below and share your favorites!

An End to World Hunger

Every 6 seconds, a child dies from malnutrition and related diseases. This is an awful truth that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN has been trying to fix for years.  That is why, 30 years ago, the organization named October 16th World Food Day. It is on this day of the year that we are asked to stop for a moment and think about the people all around the world who go hungry every day. In order to increase awareness for the cause, many different organizations have begun holding events over the years. Here is a small sample of the events that went on this year:

-          The Ark of Learning – on September 30th, the U.S. National Committee for World Food Day collected non-perishable food items and donated them at local food pantries across the country.

 -          Itadakimasu – on October 14th, Table For Two  USA (a national organization that partners with restaurants and other food establishments to serve healthy, nutritionally balanced meals, and gives the proceeds to provide school lunches in countries such as Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia) and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs connected simultaneous video feeds in New York, D.C., San Francisco and Tokyo. Itadakimasu means “Bon Appetit” in Japanese, and the event was intended to raise awareness and money for the cause.

 -          The Danforth Center’s World Food Day Commemoration – on October 14th & 15th, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Missouri hosted a large, two-part event for the cause.

  • Part 1: The “NOW” – 3,000 volunteers packaged meals for 500,000 children in Tanzania.
  • Part 2: The “FOREVER” – after packaging the food, volunteers were able to explore the science center, where they saw photo displays, were able to touch and taste plants developed by scientists, and meet the real scientists and farmers themselves.

 -          Living Full – on October 16th in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, local restaurants and vendors came out to spread awareness, while providing a fun-filled day for the whole family. They provided food, family activities, prizes, and art galleries.

 -           World Food Day Sunday Dinners – on October 16th, Oxfam America (an international relief and development organization) asked thousands of people to dedicate their Sunday dinner to a conversation about where the food comes from, who is behind its cultivation and how we can make the system more sustainable. They made placemats to use at the dinner table, as well as sets of recipe cards to give out to guests with cheap recipes printed on them.

These are but a few of the events that went on this year in an effort to bring an end to world hunger in the near future. Did you take part in any World Food Day events? Leave a comment below and tell us all about it!

Eating Green and Staying Healthy

October is National Vegetarian Month. This month, we learn what it truly means to be vegetarian, and we (should) take steps toward a healthier body. I’m not talking about going from one extreme to the other here, I’m just saying, as a lover of red meat and of salad, there has to be some sort of happy medium in order to maintain a healthy diet. If you’re having trouble getting started or don’t know where to begin, here are a few tips that might help you to start eating better:

1.  Take baby steps. You don’t have to go all in and stop eating anything with a face. Just substitute one hot dog for a salad or some fruit every now and then. Once you’ve gotten the hang of this, you can graduate up to making one day of the week a “meatless day” (ex: Meatless Mondays), where you eat only fruits, vegetables and grains.

2.  Think of the money you’ll save! Whenever I go food shopping, the most expensive thing in my cart is the meat. This goes for restaurants as well – what’s the most expensive thing on the menu? Not the salads, that’s for sure!

3.  Eating the right food helps with weight loss.  When the body doesn’t get the right nutrients, it wants more food and that’s why most people over eat.  When the body gets all the nutrients it needs, it doesn’t ask for more food.

4.  Choose the colorful fruits and veggies. Eating a “rainbow” of fruits and vegetables every so often can be a great break for your body. The brighter and deeper colored fruits and vegetables often contain higher concentrations of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

5.  Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Most of the time, the healthier ingredients can be found around the outer edges of the grocery store (where are the cookies? Right in the middle!). Try to concentrate on keeping to the outer ring of the store, and your shopping cart will be a lot healthier.

These are just a few little tips to a healthier body, and a healthier body gives you more energy and a longer, happier life.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is the time of year when the major breast cancer charities campaign in order to increase awareness of the disease, and also hold fundraisers for research into the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and hopefully an eventual cure of breast cancer. Over the years this has become a worldwide phenomenon, and everyone has their own way of honoring their loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer, or of celebrating their own ability to survive the disease. Many organizations hold 5k walk/runs, like the American Cancer Society and Susan G Komen.

As you may already know, our sister company, Uniform Advantage took part in this year’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer 5K walk, in order to raise money to fund Breast Cancer research. As it stands, our team has raised over $2,300 for the cause, and after the company matches with its own money, we will have raised close to (if not more than) our goal of $5,000!

Many of our friends and Facebook fans were able to attend the event, and even came to see us as we walked (I’m sure it had nothing to do with the free t-shirts we were giving out!). Here are some pictures we took at the event:

Stop, Drop, and Roll!

Next week, from October 9 – 15th, we celebrate Fire Prevention Week. This is the time when we spread awareness of fire prevention practices and honor our Fire Fighters across the country. Exactly one hundred years ago, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (FMANA) sponsored the first Fire Prevention Day on October 9, 1911. This happened to be the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which took place back in 1871, and burned for over 27 hours, taking the lives of over 300 people. In 1922, Fire Prevention day became a week-long celebration of our Fire Fighters and the memory of those who were lost.

Today, schools use this week to teach prevention and fire safety to children. They are taught how to test smoke detectors, how to find the easiest escape route from a building, they learn to always stay low when evacuating, and let’s not forget the good old “Stop, Drop, and Roll!” As adults, we use this week to thank the firefighters in our lives for everything they do. So, if you know any firefighters, be sure to express your thanks this week for putting their own lives at risk to save others.

And, speaking of fires and hot places, be sure to check out our mesh chef coats so that you can stay cool during all of those long days cooking in that sweltering kitchen! And you won’t find a better selection or price than at ChefUniforms.com!
