Cheese Lovers, Unite!

Today is one of my favorite holidays… National Cheese Lover’s Day! As a cheese enthusiast, I find this holiday even more enticing, because it just gives me one more reason (as if I needed one) to enjoy a food that I love so much! To celebrate, here are some facts about cheese that you may not know:

– Did you know that the average American consumes over 30 pounds of cheese per year?

– There are over 900 different kinds of cheeses in the world today.

– Cheese is classified by texture:

  • Fresh (ex: Ricotta)
  • Soft (ex: Feta)
  • Semi-soft (ex: Fontina)
  • Semi-hard (ex: Gouda)
  • Hard (ex: Cheddar)
  • Double or Triple crème cheese (ex: Brillat-Savarin)
  • Blue (ex: Gorgonzola)
  • Washed rind (ex: Limburger)
  • Bloomy rind (ex: Brie)

– Some types of cheese have been around for thousands of years (between 4-6,000 B.C.), while others, such as Swiss, have only been around for a few hundred.

– The U.S. produces over ¼ of the world’s supply of cheese, making up about 9 billion pounds per year.

– Over 1/3 of the milk production in the U.S. is used to make cheese.

With so many different types of cheese out there, it can be difficult to choose a favorite. What’s your favorite type of cheese to cook with, or just eat on a cracker? Leave a comment below – If it’s something new to me, I’ll go out and try it ASAP and let you know what I think!
