National Waiters and Waitresses Day

National Waiter & Watiress Day

With just under 600,000 restaurants in this country, it can be quite difficult to stand out as a waiter or waitress. For those of you who go above and beyond to provide exceptional service to your patrons, this day serves to honor your hard work and dedication to your craft.

For those of us who are not part of the wait staff, it is important to realize that across the country, about 70% of states pay less than $5.00 per hour to tipped employees. So, with that in mind, it is time to stop thinking of a tip as an “extra bonus for great service,” and start thinking of it as part of that person’s salary. So go ahead and give your server an extra few dollars today to thank them for their hard work, they’ve earned it!

If you’re feeling extra generous, why not purchase your favorite server a new restaurant uniform from ChefUniforms.com?

St. Patty’s Day Around the World

Happy St. Patty’s Day, everyone! While many people would tell you that this holiday is about going out and being festive, it’s important to note that it’s about more than just drinking green beer and partying. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th every year on the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish observe today as a religious holiday, as it falls during the Christian season of Lent. So, Irish families would traditionally go to church in the morning and celebrate afterward with dancing, drinking and feasting. The customary meal for this holiday is Irish bacon and cabbage.

Up until recently in Ireland, the law mandated that all of the pubs be closed on March 17th. However, in 1995, in a campaign to drive tourism to the country, the Irish government decided to hold a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater and fireworks.

In the United States, we celebrate this holiday a bit Chicago Riverdifferently. The Chicago River is dyed green in celebration of the day – a creative way to bring the spirit of the season to its residents. This started in 1962, when city pollution-control workers used vegetable dyes to trace illegal sewage discharges. They then realized that this dye produced a very festive side-effect: it turned the river green!

This day has evolved from a religious holiday to one of Irish patriotism around the world. Whether you are Irish or not, you have undoubtedly sampled a green beer, or at least tasted one of these traditional Irish dishes:

  • Irish Bacon and Cabbage
  • Corned Beef and Cabbage
  • Shepherd’s Pie
  • Irish Soda Bread
  • Stuffed Cabbage
  • Potato Cakes

Whether you’re eating one of these tasty dishes or cooking it, don’t forget to wear your green chef coat for the occasion! Don’t have one? Pick one up at ChefUniforms.com, and shop till you drop! Green Chef Coat

Culinarians Day

Today is Culinarians Day! This is an especially important holiday for our readers, since it’s actually about you! Today, we celebrate all of the cooks in our lives. Not just the professional chefs (though they certainly qualify), but anyone and everyone who loves to cook. So how does one celebrate Culinarians day? Simple, just do what you do best – cook! Today, make something special for your loved ones, or perhaps cook up something for your favorite culinarian!

Another way to celebrate this great holiday is to buy yourself (or your favorite culinary artist) the gift of a new chef uniform (insert shameless plug here). What better way to say “I appreciate you and love when you cook for me” then an embroidered chef coat, with your loved one’s name emblazoned on the front? Or perhaps a new pair of chef pants, because you noticed the old ones are covered in (what you hope is) grease. Maybe a pair of non-slip chef shoes, for those who just can’t seem to stay on their feet? We’ve got it all, so just hop on by ChefUniforms.com and choose the ensemble that’s right for you!

Happy Culinarians Day!

Dirt Cup

A National Chocolate Pudding Day Recipe: Fun for the Kids!

In honor of National Chocolate Pudding Day, I wanted to post something fun for the young ones (and the young-at-heart). This is a dessert recipe that is just as fun to make as it is to eat, and it’s so simple, your kids can do it themselves!

(Warning: This may get a little messy, so you might want to throw a few paper towels down, and let the little chefs wear your chef coat.)

Cup of Dirt

Servings: 2

Prep Time: 10-15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Chocolate Pudding: 2 cups. (Either make your own or grab a couple of Snack Packs, either way is fine!)
  • Oreos: 8
  • Gummy worms: 5-6

Method

  1. Crush up the Oreos the best you can, and try to break all of the bigger chunks up. Some people like it to be a fine powder, while others prefer it a little chunky.
  2. Mix about 1/3 of the crushed Oreos with the chocolate pudding in a bowl.
  3. Pour the pudding into two cups and top each off with the rest of the crushed Oreos.
  4. Throw in some gummy worms.
  5. Enjoy!

National Dairy Month: A Cheese-Lover’s Dream

June is National Dairy Month, when we are all reminded just how important dairy products are to our health (and taste buds). Back in 1937, this month-long event began as National Milk Month, as a means to promote drinking milk every day. It was initially conjured up to increase demand for milk when there was a surplus of the beverage. In recent years, however, this has become an annual tradition that celebrates the dairy industry and its global contributions.

Not only are dairy products rich in nutrients, they just so happen to be delicious as well. Personally, I can’t eat a single meal without some dairy product involved… which usually ends up being cheese of some sort. So to celebrate this great month of cheese and cheese-related food products, I’ll prepare any dairy-centered dish that you, our loyal readers and fans, want. Just post a recipe below!

What’s your favorite dairy product? When you are in the kitchen, wearing your chef coat, what is the dairy product that you like to use the most while cooking?

Happy Father’s Day!

It’s Father’s Day again, and ChefUniforms.com would like to wish all of the fathers out there a happy and healthy holiday with your families. If you’re like me, you are probably still looking for that last-minute Father’s Day gift. Luckily, last year we posted a blog with some ideas for just such an occasion, so read and enjoy: A Gift for Father’s Day. And as we said last year, the way to any man’s heart is through his stomach, so cook up a little something he’ll enjoy, and it’ll be a Father’s Day to remember. Here are a few ideas (in addition to those listed in last year’s blog) that your dad is sure to love, because they all incorporate bacon into the mix! Wrap anything in bacon and he will love you for it… Seriously, anything.

- Bacon Strip Pancakes – speaking of breakfast, why take time preparing the main entrée and sides, when you can include it all in one! Cook the bacon strips directly into the pancakes. Save time, dishwasher space, and make your dad or husband the happiest man on earth for one glorious breakfast.

- Bacon-wrapped tater tots – how amazing does that sound?! These are a great appetizer or snack, and prepare his taste buds for the bacon-tastic meal that is to come.

- Bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers – give your bacon some extra kick with a spicy jalapeno inside! This is another great appetizer or hors d’ oeuvre idea, and it’ll only take you 20 minutes to prepare and make!

- Chicken and waffle sandwich – don’t forget the bacon! Not only will this sandwich include 3 of his favorite foods on one epic plate, it’ll be the perfect combination of breakfast, lunch and dinner that will make his mouth water just looking at it.

- Grilled Cheese with Bacon – the classic sandwich with a dash of awesome. The crispy bacon adds texture and flavor to the sandwich, while preserving that gooey cheesy center.

- Chocolate Covered Bacon – a dessert that includes both chocolate and bacon? Doesn’t get much better than that! Drizzle it on or dip the whole thing, it’s up to you!

Of course there are thousands of bacon-themed ideas to choose from, but this was a short list of the ones that I plan on trying myself in the near future. I’ll be sure to post recipes and pictures when I do!

Do you have a favorite bacon-themed meal or dish? Share a recipe with us and we’ll cook it up!
